SEO in Korea?? Naver.com & Daum.net

Does anyone have any experience with seo for Korean language websites in using the major south Korean engines/portals?

I understand they are much more of a closed system and search marketing is a very different game. Beyond that i know nothing. And i don't speak korean.

I have a site i built for a friend who offers rock climbing courses in Korea. The english portion of the site does well in Google but the Korean pages do next to nothing.

Do Naver & Daum crawl and look for sites, or do you need to submit? Whats it take to rank?

Anyone here have any insight to seo in Korea?

Naver is like Google in Korea -- Overwhelmingly #1.

For optimization, remember that Naver is NOT about relevance like Google is. Naver is about making money for Naver. They serve up results from their own network if possible. Don't go in thinking that it's the same game as Google, Yahoo or Live. You'll fail.

Naver (and Daum) are entertainment portals. (They understand what they web is really about for most people -- entertainment.) So, you're not going to get anywhere until you go down that path.

For that, you need bloggers writing about the site and linking to it. That's your #1 tactic. Naver serves up blog results right near the top of the page.

Google has minimally localized itself for Korea. Look at google.co.kr and search for something (preferably in Korean). You'll get blog results and the like on the right side.

There are of course a lot of other things to do, but that's a start. Also see if you can get mini-homepi type pages linking to the site. (Cyworld, etc.)

No word of a lie here -- I can search for something in Naver/Daum for 20~30 minutes and not find what I need. I go to Google and get it within 20~30 seconds. (I'm searching in Korean there.)

I hope that paints a better picture of things for you.
