I'm wondering if someone can give me a quick crash course to how SEO works. Also, what is link building and backlinks, etc?

    Thanks!

Search Engine Optimization also known as the acronym SEO works on the principle of satisfying search engine algorithms. Search engines used advanced mathematical equations to analyze and sort websites. Websites that correspond to those equations(algorithms) with highest relevancy get top spots in search results.

The algorithms are somewhat decoded through various tests by search engine optimizers, however, there is no magic formula to find out how SEO works.

Different industries will require slightly different approach. Certain basics of how search engine optimization works

SEO isn't Rocket Science. In fact it's based on 4 key principals:

    1. Identify the Right Keywords

    2. Optimize the website

    3. Optimize Inbound Links (Backlinks)

    4. Measure Results and Repeat

Each of those 4 key principals have a lot of details, but everything comes back to them.

Addressing relevancy in back links as it pertains to SEO -A relevant backlink is a live link which takes the visitor to your website from a relevant third party’s website. That backlink can be displayed either as anchor text or as your URL, or it can be linked from a graphic. Your website’s popularity and page rank are largely determined by the number and quality of incoming links to your site. Traffic from relevant backlinks is highly targeted, but do all backlinks carry the same weight, in terms of SEO power? The answer is NO.

A link is a link is a link – but links from sites with high page rank give your site more “SEO Juice.” To maximize the value of your backlink, I recommend using keyword anchor text that matches the keywords in your URL, title tag, H tags and content. And don’t send all backlinks to your homepage – spread them around your site. Make your backlink relevant to the page on your site it most closely matches.

Wow! Thanks to everyone for the very informative responses. Now that I've gotten a feel of how it works, I want to start building a niche based website targeting certain k/w's.

So, what if hypothetically I wanted to build an e-commerce website that sells colored contact lenses. It's going to be wordpress based. My question is, how powerful are these "SEOPRESSER" and "CLICKBUMP SEO" products? Are they easy to use and as effective as the more traditional methods?
