I have got my first bit of seo work, but I am still quite new to the whole topic.

It is for a site that wants their homepage ranking for their main keyword boosted, as well as some of their categories which arent on page one.

So for these categories, I am literally just trying to build links to the specific category pages, is this the correct way to do it?

The reason I am concerned is because I built one tiered link like this for one category

    money site < squidoo < weebly < 3 articles

and I am really concerned as the site was ranked 53rd and now it is no where to be found, gone through the first 40 pages of Google. But, the category page is still indexed. I was expecting this to shoot it to the top page.

    Any ideas??

Could it be that I am building too many links to quickly, as I have done a tiered link and one EZA to the homepage, and then 2 tiered links to 2 categories (1 each)

well they just wanted links building really, I told them I'm not that clued up on onpage. I know the main stuff. The website has a sitemap, but I'm not sure how to know if it has been submitted to webmaster tools?

should I be worried by the fact the site is 4-5 years old and that category page has just vanished from the rankings? What can I do?

hard work..that's all you need to do; putting your web url when you comment blogs, submit your web url on google, yahoo, bing etc, writing press release, bookmarking on social network such as delicious, dig, reddit etc

    good luck

There should be a monitoring board to stop this kind of practice. Imagine if you were to take your first driving lesson and the instructor said to you. 'Hey you are my first pupil, however, I know F*** all about instructing'.... where would you be then?... Disgraceful!!!!....

Right now is a difficult time for you with the panda update and everyone freaking out about losing mass ranks. We can't see anything about your site and I don't expect you to divulge anything so that really leaves us at a disadvantage in trying to help you. So all I can really say is start with the basics.

    Get all your titles optimized.
Get all your page descriptions optimized
Get your page text checked for keywords ( but don't obsess over keyword density )

you need to have the site in good order before you do the other things that it seems you know how to do. The reason you need to do this is because when people arrive at the site Google is going to be measuring how much people like site and if you don't like it it's not going to rank very well.

Everyone wants to be on page 1... So I think it's important for you to explain your client if you haven't already the realistic chances of making it to page 1. With enough work you can do it but if it's somebody's blog and they try to take page 1 computer accessories... that's a totally unrealistic expectation. Some people are not in touch with that.

A good idea is to also add videos when you can short ones just enough to have people watch them and stay on the site.

then build inbound link's... Relevant links... Don't try to take shortcuts or automated stuff. A few quality back links from relevant sites can be hard to achieve in the retail sector especially because there are so many competitors that you will never get a link from. That's why people resort to mass linking from blogs newsfeeds and everywhere else they think they can score a link from. The links end up being low quality and so you need a lot to get anywhere.

Then there's video promotion in which you can drive traffic to a site if you have the time and skill to put together videos that will get people's interest and finally click through to the website.

You have a lot of work cut out for you especially if the site has been de-indexed. It might be a fluke but you need to check that site to see if they may have some type of penalty.

I agree, it's not fair to convince a business you know what you're doing when you haven't got a clue, you could do some real damage to their business if you mess up.
