I think SEO has come a long way and getting free quality backlinks is getting impossible these days. Any opinions.
Not impossible But you gotta spend money to get money. If you try to get everything for free or cheap, IM is not for you I think. Just my opinion

Backlinks obtained from paid links are not found to be more effective, than earlier, so collecting them by performing regular SEO tactics will be better and will get to see some improvement, also as we know most of the sites have suffered with Google Panda update.
You can not say that is impossible, can say that requires extra effort to search for good back links.

There never has been something like "free" backlinks anyway. Everyone, who has at least looked at the outside of a business school building, should know that your own manpower is also an investment. So if you think of sitting down 5 hours to generate maybe 100 backlinks, you should consider investing $20 to get 5000 of them. I agree with blomstervand on this:

Yeah it will be complicated if you don't know how to handled your website and applied the effective SEO strategy. Learn to figure it out by keep on testing and searching! Also you need budget.

i'm finding that the white hat stuff is finally beginning to pay off in terms of linkbuilding. people are interested in my blog and want to read it / have me write guest posts, etc. the high quality links are helping us!
