SEO Geo-targeting

    Hello,

I have a few questions regarding geo-targeting, and creating multiple sites for the same company for different geographic markets.

We want to create separate versions of our company web site, under the same branded company name, for different markets. For example:

    1) companyname.com (already exists for the US market, with US prices)
    2) companyname.co.uk – for the UK market, will have GBP prices and will be hosted on a UK server
    3) companyname.ca – for the Canadian market- will have CAD prices and will be hosted on a CA server
    4) companyname.com.au – for the Australian market, will have AUD prices and will be hosted on an AU server

Ideally, when a customer comes to companyname.com and their IP is Canadian, I want to automatically forward them to the Canadian site (companyname.ca) so they see the Canadian prices and relevant content right away. The same goes for visitors from UK, AU, and any other countries we decide on targeting individually.

    1) Can you please let me know your recommendations? My main concerns are the effects of auto-forwarding users based on IP (through htaccess re-direction for example), and copying over companyname.com design, graphics, logo, content, prices, etc. to a the other 3 domain names such as companyname.ca . Does the content on each site need to be 100% unique and pass copyscape accordingly?

    2) Also, should we link the sites together? Eg. show the other country flags at the bottom of the site

    3) What effects will that have on the search engines? For example, will they spider all of the sites and then show companyname.com on the google.com US results, companyname.ca on google.ca Canadian results, and so on?

thanks for your help. i look forward to hearing your suggestions and comments.

    Rob
