the so called secret is that sites hosted on same ip are treated as related (related:www.yoursite.com) and if interlinked, the effect of interlinking is lessened or 0. also sites with similar content would be treated as one site etc etc..
Were are the sites located geographically as this can make a difference for ranking in nation versions of google for certain domains.
