I admit from beginning that I am no expert in this subject and my post is only based on my own observations and in regard to Google.

When I made my forum (Gentlemen's Café), I paid some one here to submit my site to different directories (around 100 SEO friendly), my site was accepted in majority of cases and you could see by checking link back in Google. It got PR 4 also. After the last update the majority of those links are disappeared from Google but the link from my signature in this forum are still shown.

I also have a link section in my forum which is in ASP and dynamic links, so it is not SEO friendly according to strict definition. I have done 2 test with registering a new domain name and adding it to my link section and the new domains are in Google after about 3-7 days.

This has lead me to believe that the old concept of SEO friendly with static link really doesn't matter when it comes to Google and I also think that in their new method, they are more concerned about the quality of the site which has the link (offering a little more than just a link farm) and that is the reason they are not valuing the directories as highly as before.

As mentioned before, these are just my own observations and I am not claiming that my conclusions are 100% correct.

    You all are wrong.
    Why? Because…

SEO friendly means; if you move your mouse over Title, then Status Bar should show domain of listed site and not internal directory link as for example in directory.tld/cgi/some-folder/link555

The same Rule applies to every kink related to listed site.
Reasoning behind that is; internal link benefit directory and not site owner in SERP when SE listing is point to directory and not to site

You will find more about Friendly Directories here http://www.amray.com/blog
or you can visit http://info.vilesilencer.com/forum and read what Dan says.

i agree with your point, usually the indexed page number can show the directory popular or not.

Are you trying to make some point or here for a Carnival ride?

Why would the amount of pages show popularity and how?

I really don't understand why some directory owners would claim that their directories are SEO friendly when in reality they aren't.
I feel that if you approve a submission in your directory, you should have the decency to offer a permanent, dofollow link to that site.
If you feel a site is not worthy of that, then isn't it a better choice to reject the site? I mean, if for example I receive a site that
doesn't follow my submission guidelines or is a low quality site, I will reject it. On the other hand, if I receive a site that follows the guidelines
and is acceptable, then I will do everything I can to assist that site because I value the time and effort that person took to read my submission
guidelines and submit his/her quality site to my directory.

    Redirect is terrible for SEO.

Google will recognize this as duplicate content.

Of Course, one of the most effective tools you can use is an SEO friendly link directory. Also, You have to build up your rep through your content and proper SEO techniques like using the right density of keywords, proper categorization and catchy titles.
