    hi,
I have come to know that Joomla isn't much good with its default URLs & hence need to edit in htaccess.txt?
Have I come across some wrong info?

How to make joomla url's SEO friendly?

Click on Site -> Global Configuration, on the right there is a panel "SEO Settings". Make the 3 options Yes and rename the .htaccess file to htaccess.txt
Your url will be like this:

Although not free, I recommand you to install the extension SH404 Sef.

I tested a lot of SEO extensions for Joomla and I came back to SH404 Sef because none other is working as well.

Easy to use for beginners and a lot of advanced and usefull options for intermediates.

The price is 35$ per year but if you have more than one Joomla websites it's quite not expensive.

To have clean and SEO friendly URL's for the Joomla website , then needs to use .htacces file. This means that your URLs are reading like normal pages that contain your keywords. This will give them a better Search Engine index as well as easier for you visitors to remember.
The basic purpose of the .htaccess file here is to Rewrite the cryptic URL’s from a DCMS to more readable URL’s. For Apache to be able to do that, it needs to know some things about the URL Joomla produces and how they should be handled. These information is stored in the .htaccess file. This needs to rename the file htaccess.txt to .htaccess via your FTP Program.

    1. Make the 3 options Yes for SEO setting
    2. Rename your htaccess.txt to .htaccess with FTP. You can get it free in http://filezilla-project.org/

When using sh404 with joomfish, I recommend that you switch the "use pageId" on instead of "off" in the panel configuration of sh404. It will help to avoid conflicts between the menu items.
You can also modify the options of the "system - jfrooter" plugin (installed by joomfish, in your plugin list). Just try and test the different settings until everythings work.
    Hope it helps.
