SEO friend doesnt like my brand/domain name. thoughts?

Always wanted an adult blog. not porn related.

I tell a friend who does seo for a side gig about a brand "the adult blog" I am thinking about running with. not sure the direction yet just getting ideas and feedback.

He says having the word "blog" in my domain name will drive lots of potential visitors away who are looking for more serious content. regardless of what the sites about.

Thinks I should go with something else like a chickado or yahoo or gizmodo. I like "The Adult Blog" but would love some feedback on if this is a decent brand to run with?

Sort of asked about this in another thread but got one persons feedback and no real input.

I don't have a problem with the name as such, and it's not the "blog" part that puts me off. However, you say it's not porn related, but I think 99% of the people who just saw the name would think it's porn. Just out of curiosity, what will the blog be about that's so "adult"?

Yes, as soon as I see the word "adult" I have to admit to thinking the content is also porn related as well.

still working on the direction. but adult products, adult games, adult education for a better sex life and relationship etc.
I dont have a problem if people think its related to porn and hey maybe I will have some related resources.

Im more so inquiring about the name as a brand. I guess beauty might be in the eye of the beholder here

By the way. the domain was used for a crappy porn site in 2013 before dropped, according to the archive site, so you two are bang on with the assumptions.

I dont see this hurting my future but only time will tell

I think that it would be better to focus on one niche, hard to monetize if the site is about games, relationships, different products etc... unless of course it's a huge site.

But as for the question at hand, no, I don't think the name/brand The Adult Blog is bad, definitely better than chickado. It is hard for people to remember random brand name that's new and unknown.

probably great advice to narrow down to one niche. That is what my seo friend says as well.
I do have a ton of free time on my hands but a "huge site" it will not be.

I may try to do one very specific niche on another domain or a subdomain and see how traffic and rank etc compares to a general adult theme.

Thank you for all the input.
can I assume you have had experience with a narrow niche vs a wide topic? or are you just going with the general consensus of most webmasters and seo people?

Yes, I have had experience with both, but a very wide topic has never made any money for me... well, actually, I got some cash when I sold the site :D. Good luck with yours!

care to share average daily uniques for said "wide topic" site? just for an idea of the failure level so to speak.
I usually equate 1000 uniques to a dollar profit if just going the ad route.

Not really sure about that. A brand name is something that stands out and makes you noticed. There is a reason why names like Yahoo, Google, MOZ etc. are called brandables. This is because they are not dictionary words but names someone thought of. "The Adult Blog", while I see nothing wrong with the name, is not a brand. Its a generic name and a domain most likely picked because someone thought that including keywords in the domain is the way to go. The name is pretty generic and I doubt that someone will separate TheAdultBlog from just AN adult blog. Again, nothing wrong with the name, but not exactly brandable.. ;)

good points! I thought it was somewhat a brand. did research and I know the keywords are worthless. that had nothing to do with my choice. googling "the adult blog" (without captions) shows a bunch of content policies pages.

My author name at blog is "the adult" border line humor angle.

I always have a different view of domains and sites after working on them for 6 months.

and I appreciate your views about it not being a brand or brand-able. got the gears in my brain turning again
