Given that their share of search is so small is it worth doing anything to my site to optimize for Yahoo?

I suggest you try to optimize for google, your site will automatically rank well in MSN and Yahoo too. You need to build back links, thats the key, so back links will help you rank well in all search engines.

i agree with both the above posts. if you build your links right it is pretty easy to rank in both (or all three). There isn't any Yahoo specific tactics that I employ

Yeah... I noticed that if you're ranking well for SERPS in google, the same goes for other sites. The other way around doesn't hold

Yahoo is a dead end. I get about 2% of my traffic from Yahoo. I'd concentrate on google... regardless both searc engines don't have HUGE differences in how the rank you. Unique content, thick keyword densty, and lots of backlinks will get you places you've never seen.

How do you optimize for a specific search engine as opposed to optimizing your site in general? If I build backlinks, focus on on-site content, etc isn't that just optimization period?

They're right about optimizing for Google, optimizing for one search engine will have effects on all of them.

It would be good if people could give some tips on how Yahoo differs to Google though. I've got sites ranking well on Google and the terms hardly show up on Yahoo so it does not always follow that ranking well on Google will translate to Yahoo.

Do you still have loads of traffic from yahoo? I don't. My site stats say everything (99.9%) come from Google. Makes little sense to work on yahoo rankings

I barely get any traffic at all from yahoo. I can't even find myself within the first 5 pages for the keywords im targeting, yet im listed on page one for those same search terms in google.

Yahoo traffic is worth going for. It converts much better than Google traffic.

I've found Yahoo will count more links from the same sites, for instance one of the sites in my sig ranks #1 for its keyword on Yahoo and #29 on Google.

Yahoo seems less sensitive to always having the same anchor text, though variation is always good. Also, I've heard that Yahoo prizes validating XHTML more than other search engines.

Do the same thing for all the search engines... the only thing that varies between them is their algorythms but no one knows those so it's a shot in the dark.

I think if you optimize it for Google, then it will be optimized for Yahoo automatically.
