    The most important thing is to make sure that you 301 redirect all old files to the most relevant new page.

    That way, if any of your old files where linked to you should still get the Google juice from them when you move over.

    Redirect 404 not found to index if you dont know the old structure or want an easy work

    Redirect permanently - 301? You can do this most simply with the Apache mod_rewrite module but it can also be done through server side scripting such as PHP

    Wow do you want to cause problems with your site? Thinks before you speak please.....

    Create a well designed 404 page with the normal navigation structure and the power will continue to get passed through your site and your users will understand what has happened.
