SEO for image gallery: anchor or normal text?

    I'm optimizing image gallery, is it better to link image with text next to it (anchor) or just leave normal text?

    example:
    :) smile
    :) smile (link to smile picture)

    ..and so on

    Give the image keyword rich file name and a small description for the image using the alt attribute

    thanks, that's what I'm currently doing. I've asked about the text next to image,I consider it has smaller importance
