SEO for Dynamic URLs

I have just launched a website that sells Clothes. All the product data is displayed by a file called products.php and I have done some URL rewrites to make the URL more user and SEO friendly, eg:

    products/footwear/nike

I have just begun to get some exposure on Google which is good. However my question is say a few months down the line I need to change my URL, to for example:

    products/trainers/nike

I know I can do a 301 redirect to the new URL, however my question is how long is it before Google updates its link to point to my new URL?

Also as I will be restructuring the site I have another question regarding the links:

On my home page I have a navigation menu, one of the links on the menu is 'Trainers'.

When you click on 'Trainers' it takes you to a second page where there are some more links to select the make. One of the links is 'Trainers by Nike'.

When you click on 'Trainers by Nike' it takes you to a third page that has a H1 heading 'Trainers by Nike' followed by the results.

My question is which page will come up in the list of results when a user searches for 'Nike Trainers' in Google? (second or third?)

Can you not have products/footwear/nike side-by-side with products/trainers/nike?

No because I think 'footwear' would be too broad a term, which is why I am splitting it up further.

Is anyone able to advise? Thanks.

    You want the truth?!

6 months minimum and 8 months max.

When its done, make a robots file to block older pages and remove them from index using Google web master tools.

    more queries?

    I would change the following:

    products/footwear/nike
    products/trainers/nike

    to:

    products/nike/footwear
    products/nike/trainers

This way the site will be better structured and footwear, trainers, etc will help build "nike" niche, etc.

Well this number is not official or identified as authority. It can even take less then 2-3 months. Again its not official. But! to be on the safe side, give your redirection a decent time for changes to take effect properly.

    cheers
