Advice I can give is think strongly about your post titles (they carry some seo weight), try to think from the eyes off a searcher in google. Also, if you can, the date in the url post, I prefer not to have it there on my blog. Relevant links from other relevant footie blogs? List at blog listing sites..... www.bumpzee.com is one for starters

Get an account on technorati, ping them whenever you post. go to pingomatic and submit your site when you post. submit your site to blog directories. post comments in other people's blogs. actual comments in blogs like yours, not just garbage in anyone elses blog (those will get deleted by the blog owner). start a blog roll, and link to other like-minded blogs. post good quality posts, and post regularly. This all might sound like lots of work, but blogging should be a labor of love. Maybe it was a get-rich-quick scheme once, but getting to the top of the blogging tree is a lot of work. I read somewhere that 50% of all bloggers give up within the first three months. Your first goal should be to still be blogging in three months time.
Try using www.articleswap.biz. Grab the bookmarklet from that page. Then after submitting your post, go to the permalink and click the bookmarklet. Many manual and automatic SEOish things then happen. Your page is fed to the search engines, and when users click on it they go to your page (inside a frame with a special toolbar) to get you listed quickly. Yah, it looked like Jim covered everything, Only thing I couldn't do was the Pemalink. I'm on a windows server and it didn't seem to work right
Can't advise there, but my blog is in wordpress, so I just go into permalinks in the admin area and format like this. /%postname%/
