SEO for beginners

I am currently in the process of having a complex commercial website made, and i'm on a relatively tight budget. Obviously, there are many companies out there who will offer me SEO services for a price, an expensive prince. I would like my site to be optumized, but to be paying hundreds of pounds for a service which will not show results until 4 - 6 months down the line seems like a big risk. Therefore, the idea of doing the SEO work myself comes into play. I am not particularly good with webdesign, but I am willing to learn the basics of SEO. Is it just a case of getting a few books togeather and going for it, or is it a complex process with tough learning curve? Any advice would be appreciated!

If you are looking to get fast results then SEO is not the route you should take. 4 months is not that long of a time for a site to be optimized with some link building to start showing improvements in the SERPs.

So if you are looking for a quick fix go with adwords. If you want long term which can take up to 4 months to get results go with SEO.

Could you explain backlinks please? Are they just links from one site to my site? As far as I understand, please do correct me if I am wrong, links from one site to my site are far better than having reciprocal links. That’s about as far as my SEO knowledge goes..............

Yes 1 way links are better. A backlink is just simply a link back to your site from another site.

Directory submissions are usually a good way to start off with some one way links back to your site.

    Hi george,

First, there are on-page and off-page SEO. You will encounter this two phrases by googling or reading DP posts. If your time permits, you may want to visit my SEO site (in my signature) for more details on Free SEO techniques :)

    Good Luck.

My first recommendation will be seochat.com. It contains lots of information on SEO. If you do not have time for these much of information, then I would recommend useseo.com for a summary :)

    Hope it helps.

Don't believe everything you read at seochat.

None of this is adding up for me. If you have a business and want to make money on the web with a new site you have to be willing to spend at least $5000 on seo in the first year. If your website & business can't make back the $5000 in its first year then its never going to be a success anyway.

These days you can create a perfect website with all the optimisation you can do and it will never get a decent ranking. Its all about building strong, natural links and link baiting. If a beginner could learn seo and get a site to the top of the search engines themselves then why would people still be happy to pay $1000 per hour to hire a pro?

I would say that for all the online resources :)

We are basically working along a set of unknown search engine algo and the only reliable information is from the respective search engine guidelines.. which is not a technical paper..

It is not a case of simply spending $5000 in my first year on SEO. When you are on a relatively tight budget, you need to weigh up whether or not that $5000 which has been spent on SEO could have been better spent on other, more instant means of advertising, i.e sponsored links. This could then bring in money via sales, which could then be put to one side for SEO. My point is, $5000 is a lot of money for me, and as important as SEO is, it is a long term investment and therefore you can not justify spending this amount in the early days, knowing that you will not see the results until 4 months or longer down the line. Is this not just common sense, or am I missing something?

The key issue is your seperation between SEO and online marketing. The fact is they are the same thing.

You need to hire a pro seo now to make sure your site is built in the right way. Your seo can tell your web designer how to build the site. If you wait until the site is built then your seo will come along and tell you that its crap and needs to be rebuilt at great cost.

Once you have a good site you can then concentrate on building up some great content and several tools to make people want to link to your site and visit the site. As you build these tools you can spend cash on adwords/overture and other types of advertising on the web including link building and even link buying.

Like it or not seo and online marketing are the same thing and you need to start from day 1.
