SEO for an auction site

    Hi there,

I'm trying to land a client with an auction site and would love to have some good tips on how you would optimize an auction site.

I don't really think it would be that effective to try optimizing for each campaign, since it's an auction site and most of the product auctioned on the site are likely to be gone after a couple of days. I would rather focus on the categories like “Cameras”, “Clothing” etc (PS: I won’t be targeting the actual word Cameras, since this site is not in English and targets a language group with only a few million peoples). Does anyone know any really well optimized auction or similar buy & sell sites?

Or does someone have any good tips in general? What would your strategy for optimizing an auction site look like?
Green rep will be rewarded for good answers, as always.

I have a few Build A Niche Store sites that use ebay and their affiliate program. The best luck I have had targeting shoppers and SEO is to choose brand names that people are searching for and use this as your Section or category title. For example if I was targeting guitars, I would find which guitars are the most sought after in ebay and use that as a category. Ebay may not have a specific category but I think thats good for you as a developer. Maybe use "Vintage Fender Electric Guitar" instead of Just Vintage Guitars as a category for a Musical Instrument Site. Just my 2cents, hope it helps.

i would assume that you wanted to localize your keywords and your preferred tool for keywords tracker for your local market would help you on that. l

ong tail seo would be the best option you and your best alternative you have to begin with. of course link building with the right anchor text with some of the high ranking local sites related to you is your lifeblood ... check the local competition.. and good luck..

I don't like helping the competition, but I will since you are not in my niche... As an owner of an online niche auction (music equipment) I can tell you the best way through trial and error.

#1 best way is to integrate a wordpress blog (portal type) either as the home page (recommended)... or if that is not an option, do a subfolder like www.mysite.com/blog/. And write about the niche in keyword rich articles (reviews and etc..). This will bring tons of free traffic. As time goes on, regular repeat customers will start using the auction.

#2) Do NOT charge! Flaunt the auction as being free. Make the auction free until it becomes popular-

#3) Use #2 as a calling card for public relations, find niche companies on google and ebay, call them and offer your 'free' services.

#4) PPC will do very well (after the site has good content)

I cannot say this enough (content is KING)!

P.S. Also don't forget to submit interesting articles to ezine and ect...
