Couldn't find anyone else asking this question so... I've been asked to do some SEO for a new adult related site (not porn, just toys etc). Has anyone else had experience with something like this? It's obviously harder to get backlinks because of the site content, and also Google puts a PR cap, but just wondered if anyone had any thoughts/ideas on whats the best practice for such a site? We have a separate blog running already.
First thing first: keywords. porn/adult market is aggressive and difficult to exploit. It's really hard to find the right keywords. Find a niche, and still it's gonna be hard. best luck

Ok here's an idea that could work quite well for you. Although I can't comment on the success because I've never done SEO for an adult related site. This is based on bluehatseo's article on link laundering sites http://www.bluehatseo.com/blue-hat-technique-16-link-laundering-sites/ What you need to do is setup a web directory. I recommend using the PHPld script. The directory will be for adult related sites only. As admin you'll want to change the settings so that your directory will only accept new submission that give you a reciprocal link. Using phpld you can set it so that the reciprocal link is actually set to your client's site. Then you want to submit your directory to the directorycritic.com listings (believe me its a popular list that lots of site owners and SEO'ists use). Because links in the adult industry are very hard to acquire you should get plenty of adult related sites submitting to your directory and everytime they do, they'll leave a quality targeted backlink on their site to your own adult related site. Believe me, this works. I've done it myself, not for adult related niche but as a general directory. I get anywhere from 1 to 5 one way links a day from this. I can't be certain that you'll be as successful, but good luck anyway.
also you might try to promote through image hosting services like imagereverb or imagefap. these websites are moving towards sharing platform with users and community, you can start there to build up your network (eg create a user, submit branded content, engage relationships) I know it's slightly off-topic, but I guess it might come handy anyway

I don't think it is difficult to optimize an adult site. First thing, you got a few webmaster or seo adult people that optimizes adult sites. You only got few competitors. Links are not that hard to get compared to a mainstream site. I handled a couple of these sites before and it did well on the SE rankings. Gaahl is correct. Keyword research is the very important thing to consider first on every optimization. Whether it is adult or mainstream sites.
probably optimizing a ecommerce website for toys its even easier than the same old pr0n page... toys need a specific description to get classified and bought, hence GET ON THE LONG TAIL KEYWORDS working on the long tail gives you way more chances to get on top and you'll find less competitors for a specific item you want to sell (eg "20cm raspberry flavour silent dildo" ....) this brings up two main advantages. You can (partially) forgive about getting the top rankings for the homepage and work on the internal pages on longer keyphrases which describe the single item you want to sell. moreover, users who input articulate queries to google (long keyphrases) are more technologically aware and confident towards ecommerce. While this probably does not apply for markets like us or uk, in some nations "mainstream" ppl is still reluctant in buying products from the internet. Purchases are made mainly by "advanced" users with a better knowledge of google for instance. **these was just a random rambling based upon personal beliefs, no book or other kind of reference involved so please tell me if I'm wrong
