Hello and thank you for checking out this thread! I am currently operating my own search engine and would like to discuss how it would be possible to market my search engine results pages on the major search engines perhaps using SEO for getting additional traffic to my site. My site is already receiving some traffic from all major search engine and some small ones, but compared to one of my older search engines which used to receive over 20,000 unique daily visitors (until the Big Daddy Update), this new site is not getting much traffic at all (still under 1000 unique per day). If not SEO what other type of marketing should I use? Thanks in advance for your ideas!
Having your search results pages indexed in Google is specifically forbidden. I mean, let's be realistic. Why would any of the search engines allow you to rank, in order to send traffic to your search engine? They try hard to not allow this. You may still have luck in MSN and Yahoo, though.
For a search engine, you should be more focussed with off page seo. Links, links, links. Buy them if need be, be active in forums, create a blog. Write to magazines, newspapers, ezines to see if they will talk about your service in there writings. What makes your search engine better then the rest, convince the writers and you will have your story and site posted. I think for a search engine it is all about brand recognition. Get your name out there anyway you can, but trying to rank in the engines won't help you because most of them won't rank another engines SERP's.
Search results pages may not be welcomed in google. However, I think linkranker is looking at being able to optimise his site to attract more organic traffic. This may be about adding more content pages Alternatively, looking at developing a widget that can be added to blogs etc - so they don't need to visit your site directly but would still search your database (revenue sharing for people who qualify etc).
You say it is a Search Engine but the site seems to be a large directory; for example if I search for "Best Buy", I expect a SE to show me bestbuy.com somewhere in the results - preferably #1. You show no results for a simple term like that.
It is a search engine. It's using the index my spider built and is still building. The reason it shows no results for best buy because the pages it found include some adult content so it comes back with this instead: The safe content filter removed sites with adult related content. If you are 18 or older, you may repeat your search with the adult filter off, by adding adult: in front of your query, or click on the following link: Best Buy It is a bug though, so I'm going to start working on it right away! I will only hide the results that include some adult content in them now all the results... Thanks for finding this bug for me!
Now that I take a look at the search engine, it looks more like a link farm of paid listings and no follow tags. Do a search for SEO and see what comes up. I didn't see anything, just something telling me about the safe filter removing adult content. Then I see the 3 listings on top and the ones on the right and they match up pretty close to what yahoo has on there paid listings. I am sorry to sound a little negative but how is that a search engine? *original poster answered my question in the middle of me writing this
off topici'm sorry for this) your site so slow. nearly 30 sec. has passed but search results did not loaded yet
The top three listings are highlighted with a green background color to show that they are sponsored listings, just like the ones on the right side. Those ads are sponsored by Yahoo! Probably that is why they seem so similar to the top three ads on the Yahoo! search results pages... It is not a link farm. It is a search engine, because I designed a search engine spider which crawls the web using the list of submitted URLs via the free Add URL form, then following the links found on the submitted pages...
The site was slow because I found a bug in the filtering algo (as mentioned previously on this thread) so I was working on the solution which temporarily made the site respond slowly.
Develop widgets, get ranked for the niches your search engine indexes and try to build your PR by having at least a bit of content/make sure the SE is nice and clean/Google-style with ads on the results pages. I'm going to be studying Vertical SE Marketing in order to build vertical search engines for the niches. I suggest you make contacts or you show why your SE is better and stronger than other SEs. There are many SEs out there, go for quality and fill a need, this will ensure that your SE is powerful and people will love it.
