SEO fomula for forum success

Hey all,

This forum has been kind to me so I thought I'd share.

I registered my forum name about a year ago and did not start doing anything with it until 6 months ago.

I then installed phpbb and started promoting my forum.

Now, my forum is in the top 50 results for the terms "football forum" and "football forums". At one time it was even in the top 20.

Here is what I did, and I am no SEO expert, but it has worked.

I installed phpbb search engine friendly mode, which has fixed up my links to not contain those .php?id=bvlbla, and instead contains nice human readable links like premiershipforum/topic123.htm

I also made a links page on my forum, with an automated reciprocal links submission ie automated link exchange . I contacted about a 100 sites in my niche, and nicely asked them to exchange links. About 30 responded so far with a link exchange.

My site was nowhere in the search results at the start, and I didn't worry about it because it takes time. Now when I check my stats I notice people are finding the forum based on various football related searches.

I have one forum that I launched few months ago. I selected SMF Open Source forum software. But mine is listed in Google at 70th place. Thanks for sharing.

I think it's important to understand that it takes patience with this SEO game.

Even though I am not an expert, the results I get show me that it can be done, it just takes time.
