That's not optimizing a site for the search engines (and your users). That's marketing and promotion at work. Real SEO is a totally different animal. I go with Dan's view. If some one thinking SEO as a career then he/she must distinguish the difference between SEO, SEM, Promotion work and Internet Marketing. Also doing SB purely for the gain of SERP must be avoided. If you have an interesting subject to share then one should go for it. The ultimate benefit is you may gain friends and thats the popularity. My 2c.
I see social bookmarking more as a traffic generating practice rather than link building. I honestly don't think u(or anyone) will get something specatacular by spamming social bookmarking sites. Leave them as they are. It is unfortunate that so many people in DP are involved in stumble exchange without even checking that they have been banned there and are not getting any traffic from it Of course you can do social bookmarking at personal level. Social Bookmarking can help you gain popularity, but it might not result in higher rankings. The reason behind it is as follows :- a) Most of the social networking site use rel="nofollow". This is ignored by search engines. b) hundreds of threads get crawled on daily basis, thus making it difficult for search engines to crawl your link. c) A link from adult dating and other sites will have no effect on your rankings. A small link from niche website can do wonders.
