My SEO-career started with the V7n-contest. Then I joined the Carcasherdotcom - contest but there I was to small to have a chance, but instead I help my friend Marcus Westberg (2nd right now).

But in the Astromusicologie 101, a SEO-contest only for students, I came third!

And now I am leading Swedens first SEO-contest.. So there we are. I have learned a lot on the way..

would you consider your success based on the experiences you got or simply connections of people who can help you give backlinks?

I really think skills may be evaluated if the contest is based on Yahoo SERP rather than Google because # of backlinks and the links from high PR sites are the only important ingredients. Quality contents with strange keywords don't seem to go together.

That is the reason I entered the contest. When your business is new like mine which started in Jan of this year, it can be hard to prove to possible clients that you can get the job done. The seo contest has helped alot, I entered the carcasherdotcom seocontest at the end of aug. and have made it to page 3 of google so far and still climbing.

These kind of contest can tell alot about your skills as an seo, if you can just make it to the 1st page then I would say that you are ready for the next step. I think it is alot harder to optimize for these kind of contest because, one you are going up against some of the best out there, and believe me the last thing they want to see is a rookie beat them at it, that is what makes it fun.

If you think you really have the skills of a true seo then you should give it a try and prove that not only to yourself but to others as well. Besides, nothing like good old fashion bragging rights.:)

Do SEO contests allow Black Hats? How about the investment? If one can affort spending few hundred dollars, that would be an easy SEO, no skills needed.

SEO-contests give a great experience. But also many new contacts. Don´t miss that point, contacts is really important.

Some are expert on linkbuildning, some on onpage, some are really good to design websites and some are experts in add to directories.

    Contacts is important nowadays!

Coolsitez, some of the contests allow Black Hat. Some not.

If ok with doing Black-Hats, I really don't see any point. I know many people like to call "SEO techniques". But IMHO, there is no such thing.

It's just a matter of knowing what. If everybody knows SEO in the same level, I don't know how one can be better in his "techniques".

As for investing for an SEO contest, this could simply be the easiest way to win it. So here again, I don't see any "techniques" required? And I am sure there is no way to regulate about NOT investing money at all.

    Any thoughts?

I sometimes suspect that these contests are just massive decoys. Occupy a few hundred SEOs with a contest, and distract your rivals for the main money keywords?

I have not investing any money at all in any SEO-contest (okey for the new Swedish SEO-contest managed by Jim Westergren i bought a domain..). But I have learn a lot!

In carcasherdotcom seocontest, for example, everyone must accept and follow Googles guidelines.

If you don´t want to be in a SEO-contest, okey by me. But it have been a good way in to the SEO-bransch for me.
