I've got to agree with that but it is a great (and extremely expensive) publicity stunt :D. I wonder what's the anticipated RIO ?

    Pretty nice purchase.

I'm sure noone would spend $5M on a domain like that, unless they knew what they were doing, or have some sort of plan to flip it and whatnot.

So yeah.. whoever purchased it will probably make much more. :D

Content is king. 5 million is a lot.

Down the road dot coms will drop. New things are coming. But if they have the best of both worlds - content and a great name - it's not half bad for now.

It's not really a large amount in big business - as stated above with the MySpace qoute.

5M is not worth it! if they are good in seo they can come up in the search result and if not the first be the second!if they're not doesn't matter if they have seo.com or not ,after some time they'll fail!

i think is just vanity, famous people drive expensive cars and they make the news, now by starting this new company they already have a value of 5m just for the domain, they going to sound trust worthy to others just for the domain

I think that it is a straight forward business decision. If they invest $5,000,000 in the domain, and with that investment they believe that they can make an extra $1,000,000 a year (via generated leads), then that would be a 20% return on investment. If they have the right people and right technology and marketing, then I think that this goal is very achievable and therefore a very astute business investment.

In my opinion (for me) I would have spent it on a domain with the keyword SEO :p and then 1 million or so on optimizing the site for top ranking for SEO.

However, for branding.. it's an excellent domain.. they have the potential to earn it all back and more.. (if they have money left to invest in it :p)

    sounds like a fair price.
I mean you could probably buy a better quality domain for $5M, but this is a whole industry which is actually growing fast :D
