wow at long last, I thought the 'see who can rank #1 for x term' competition had died off as I hadnt seen any for a while. Interesting they are using real terms that would be used everyday which im sure whoever is #1 for backgammon will really appreciate!

I think is definitly possible, but you'd have to beat bkgm.com, this site has some strong bl's from dmoz, wikipedia. In total about 7400 bl's for yahoo.. Getting that amount of links in a couple of months is possible.

I think one of the problems is to avoid the sandbox-effect. I believe the best option is to buy an old domain with backgammon in it and then start promoting it.

I'm wondering how much traffic a #1 for backgammon will give... And how much the affiliate party will make out of your effort to gain a high ranking for backgammon.. And what the affiliate income will be...

But it's probably just another business model, they invest a total amount of $15.000 into this contest but will probably make more out of it.

Btw, nice game..

Basically any optimized site in the contest has to link to the Backgammon site running the contest:

I wonder if the massive linkage they get will be worth the $15,000.

SEO contests are dumb. They basically invite people to deliver for full public view to search engines which methods need devaluing fastest. Then people complain about their sites losing traffic because their methods have been devalued. Go figure.

Also - it's damn unethical to target proper and useful search phrases - the SE's will absolutely not like that. It's like the old days of porn sites ranking for Disney.

Get a grip people - it's a publicity stunt, but if you take part, you'll be paying the price later when your websites are crippled by even more restrictive algo changes by search engines.

But, your choice.

I guess Google can make a contest among their staff - How many contestants and sites owned by them can they ban from their index? Price is $15k. That would be so much fun. btw. the whole SEO industry is fed my link spam/bought links. If Google bans all spammers then "search engine optimization" would return quite different results.

makes you wonder if the whole competition was made up cos someone was having trouble ranking for backgammon online (in which place it would be quite a cunning idea on their part), so they thought hey why bother spending 15k on adwords when we can get thousands of Online Backgammon gee I wonder which site will be coming up for 'online backgammon' when its over with a fat free #1 organic listing, you are right brian its very unethical to target a normally used phrase but I believe thats why they are.

It would be an easy win for someone that already has the top ranks for those terms. Send the owners of those sites a link to the contest. :)

Curious how you actually define link spam. I don't think I've gotten caught up in that, yet I rank in the top ten for several popular seo related terms. Then again...maybe my definition is different from yours. ;)

I define it as getting thousands of bought/link exchange links (related or non-related). Just look at the links of some of the top sites. More than 200000 links reported by msn from all kinds of sites - wedding, real estate, flower?, lots of front page bought links some of them costing 200$++ a month.
I don't mean solely the SEO industry. Every competitive market is just a link spam competition with 99.99% of all links unnatural.
Note: I am not complaining. I am just stating a fact.

Excuse me if I'm mistaken...but it seems a bit misleading to say "Win $15,000". From looking at their info page you can only win $8,000 even if you get #1 for all four keywords. I wonder if you get the 1+2 spot you get extra? Or if you setup multiple sites and hit all top four spots? lol

Well you did say "the whole SEO industry", which is silly. It's as silly as saying all X people are gangsters....just because some people do it doesn't mean everyone does it. Anyway, it's not necessary to have thousands of links even for competitive keywords. I do agree that there are those who break the spam berriers. :)

Very screwed up contest.

I've been waiting for a real one for a while... wish someone had chosen some meaningless term, then I would have had a go at it.
