    Many seos started by servicing their existing customers.
    For example, maybe they built a website for a customer for for themselves, and then learned seo while they were promoting their site.

    Others started by offering some service similar to data entry like directory submissions or forum posting or helping run a link exchange program. Most of the time they started with "humble beginnings". They made very little money at first, but over time, people came to trust them and they got larger jobs.
