I'm looking to buy a book on SEO and web site promotion. Something as up to date as possible.

Are there any books out there which are head and above the rest?

    Thanks!

Good question, I really haven't read an SEO e-book in a long time. Nor do I ever hear someone rave about how great an SEO e-book that got was. Your better off probably going to a borders or barns and noble to buy a hard copy. I remember seeing them in there when I was picking up a CSS quick reference guide. Your money would probably be better spent this way.

Yes it is a hard copy I want, looking through Amazon now. The book shops near me are pretty poor (UK).

I wouldn't buy a printed book. By the time you get it it'll be out of date :)

    Try Aaron Wall's SEOBook (seobook.com) and/or subscribe to SEOMOZ.org.

Inaccurate at best and flat out misleading at the worst (I'll let you decide which one is which).

Go to www.websitepublisher.net/seo-guide/ and read the comprehensive Search Engine Optimization Guide that Chris Beasley published. You can get it as a free PDF file by signing up for his forum.

Also don't forget to read the Search Engine Optimization FAQ at SitePoint.com either. http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/showthread.php?t=182915

    Seriously - save your money.

DP is the best place to learn SEO.

Read online, if you have question just ask here. People will try to explain and help.

    Goodluck

I second SEO for Dummies. Really lays it out. It is free electronically, I believe, but if you want a hard copy, it should be inexpensive through Amazon.

    1. Offline books have higher quality than many online sources
    2. Don't buy a book which is older than 2007.
    3. I recommend "Search Engine Optimization Bible" by "Jerry L. Ledford".

This book covers it all up to social bookmarking, interesting interviews with seo-gurus, etc...

I don't recommend a book, all the SEO you will need to learn is right here on this forum, from real people dealing with real life "situations". Read around the SEO subforum.

    Hello,

Personally if you are newbi, I recommend a book, allways is good to start :) SEOBook could be a good option, of course then seochat dot com, digitalpoint forum, seomoz, and many seo profesional bloggers are recommend to learn, but always is good to start a book guide.

    Best regards,
    Jakomo

The most important thing when buying a book is to check the publishing year. If it is more than a year old, don't buy it. It is sup surprising how quickly some of the info can go out of date.

Also if you go to amazon you will be able to see the reviews of each book which is really helpful, again check the date of these reviews.

Which is why I tend not to suggest or recommend books (or most Web sites for that matter). Far more often than not they focus on packing their pages (both print and Web) with theories and tricks - which change all the time - rather than the fundamentals (which do change, albeit at a glacial pace).

Let's face it. SEO is NOT rocket science or brain surgery. Sticking to the fundamentals will get you a lot farther than chasing after tricks and techniques like a third-rate lawyer chases ambulances for his next meal ticket. (Which is why selling the fundamentals in a book or ebook tends to be very bad for sales - why get people to keep buying your product once you've already taught them all they really need to know?)
