SEO better for .com.au or .net.au

    Hi Everyone,

Simple question for the SEO gurus.

I was wondering if ".com.au" would be better than "net.au" for SEO.

Or would ".com" is better than ".net"

I live in Australia, does this not make a difference to Google/Yahoo/Bing searches?

    Thanks,

    Marcus

It doesn't really matter for seo but .net.au sucks I would get the .com.au if you are targeting aussies.

I don't think that's really matter. If you using domain .au for local business, i think you should using .com.au .!

a .com will outrank the .net not because of a direct SEO advantage, but because the COM is more brandable, easy to remember and will get a higher "click through rate" and that rate is a ranking factor.

For a long term strategy it's good to have an easy to remember name, but with regard to seo and click through rates I doubt it makes much difference if you are using .com/.net/.org/.info or whatever, as long as you are providing information the searcher wants.

Completely agree. There are countless times when I accidentally type in .com rather than .net or .org which means lost traffic and lost business in your terms.

People would type .com.au more naturally so that would be recommended over the .net.au.

You will require an ABN before you can register a .com.au domain though.

As far as searches go, I get a lot of Australian traffic to one of my sites which is a .com domain from web searches. You just need to define that site's locality (in Google's webmaster tools for eg).

I belive ranking-wise both would be the same.

But yes, most people tend to type in .com.au so you will probably lose out in the end if you go down that path.

Why not cover both bases and register both and then 301 redirect one to the other. This way you are guaranteed not to lose traffic. :)

I agree with Funkymario, if you want to target Australian local business then .com.au will be the pretty good option for seo..
