SEO Bang for Buck

Hi,
I'm trying to get a good google rank for my dating niche
blog site. Most of the sites in the top 30 except for one
have domain ages that are from 3+ years old. The top 20
sites have backlink counts ranging from 100 to 2,100.
That one new site is in the top 10 and was started August
2007 and I'm closely studying their 110 backlinks.

My question has to do with the best way to invest my
money to compete in this arena:

o Spend $50 to various DP services having site submitted
to about 500 directories and social bookmark sites

o Keep my eye out and purchase a relevant expired
dating domain that is from 2005 or older.

o Spend $150/month getting a backlink from PR7 or PR 8
site

Which of these avenues would get me closer to being in the
top 20?

Thanks for your advice

George

You don't have to spend any money really, you can simple build natural related backlinks with other dating sites and services. Use the anchor text of the keyword\phrase your trying to rank for ONLY. Example Below...

<a href="http://www.yoursiteurl.com/">ANCHOR TEXT HERE</a>

Code (markup):

To be honest, the only strategy that will work effectively is buying the old domain (assuming that it's related to your niche). That being said, I would consider buying blog posts. To me that's the most effective method, and buying 1 link from a high PR site can actually cause a drop in the rankings for the term you're targeting.

Domains that transfer users\registrars are believed to actually lose weight and SERPs, this is more opinion then fact.

You're pretty much right, ssandecki. However, that doesn't deny the new owner of the domain the opportunity to expand and capitalize on the domain name though. (But that's why it's called WORK.)

I try to explain that to people all the time, working at home actually involves work!. Side note: Search Engine Strategies is in Chicago 3rd to the 7th, I'm think of attending.
