Hello Marketing friends, this article takes SEO back to the very basics, probably most useful to those just starting out.

    The foundation

    • Buy an independent domain name which has your main keyword in it. Our main keyword is Digital Marketing; so SimplyDigitalMarketing(dot)com is perfect for us.
    • If you can, buy .com, .co.uk and .org with for your chosen URL name. This will ensure any competition can’t snap them up! You can buy other ones later. Redirect the 2 secondary ones to the main one you use.
    • Name your pages sensibly, using words not numbers e.g. simplydigitalmarketing(dot)com/free-stuff
    • Put keywords in your page titles. Use different keywords for each page e.g. on our home page the page titles are Digital Marketing | Simply Digital Marketing (You can see the page titles in the internet browser tabs).

The things which affect your ranking the most are:

    • Content- Write good, relevant content with your keywords naturally woven in.
    • Backlinks- Get quality backlinks/in bound links to your site. You want links from relevant pages on a relevant site. The stronger the page’s PageRank (PR) the link comes from, the better. The anchor text for these links should be the keywords you want to be found for. E.g. a link from Marketing(dot)com to simplydigitalmarketing(dot)com where the user clicks on the word (anchor text) Digital Marketing Resources would boost our organic rankings when our audience searches for ‘digital marketing resources’. Ideally you want more backlinks/inbound links than outbound links for each page.
