Prices could range from $500. to $50,000 for a phrase like "broadband solutions".

Rates are determined by amount of work required to optimize for that phrase. . . and ongoing optimization efforts to actually get top listings for that phrase.

The amount of work is determined by the competitiveness of the phrase, the search engine friendliness and the linkability of the site.

Google returns over 60,500,000 results for broadband solutions.

Lets say the site is currently flash or all images, much more work would be required to overhaul design to make it top listable for anything.

Lets say the site has done some black hat or old spam techniques in the past, like 1000 domains all pointing to same site, joined every link exchange and webring program there is, duplicated sites for affiliates and gotten itself banned.

Cleaning up their act and building up a bunch of quality links would be required.

What if the site is amateur looking, covered in aminated banner ads, mouse follow and spinning email me images? It might be hard to get many link backs.

But if you are just talking about optimizing the content of a few pages, optimizing the navigation, adding a sitemap... gaining some links, perhaps the task wouldn't take as long, nor be so expensive.

I wouldn't have set prices based on ranking achieved as there are too many variables to consider. You could quote on a case by case basis, but it can often be hard to assess.

If it were me I would have an hourly rate, have examples of previous rankings achieved, and have a clause like - results cannot be guaranteed due to the nature of SEO.

Regarding 'broadband solutions' it doesn't look too competitive - not many total searches per month and the sites in number 1 and too are not that flash in terms of SEO.

I would quote your clients an hourly rate of between $20-$50 depending on your knowledge.

To get a full in depth understanding of all of these keyword tools you need to run them on a variety of terms. Having said that, I am going to compare how well they track search volume to a single niche long running AdWords ad group. Check this links :

Different agencies have different approaches - we will not charge a client if we do not get them a top 10 spot!
Yeah I know, we do a lot of work, but feel that we want to bring an ethical dimension to what we do.

If we success in getting a top 10 spot, we charge between £50-£100 ($100-$200) per month that we retain that position.

Its strange that some businesses actually prefer to employ us on a retainer to work on their position in the background and if we achieve a top 10 then they get a bonus!

Anyway, you can get us at: http://blackwhite.uk.com
