if i were to have a client that was ranked #1 for a paticular search term and i were to completly redesign there website, but still use good on page SEO, whould the site remain #1 because of all the backlinks or would it drop down because it is organized differantly?

same question but lets say the client was #10 and i improved the on page SEO, would it drop, stay the same, or raise and if so how fast?

i know this thred has a lot of question but if you can answer any one them that would help.

    thanks in advance

Redesigning pages will effect your rankings especially if the site has only PR 2 or lower. In this case, your rankings might drop.

redesign the site but try to retain the earlier urls if you can - if retaining the urls is not a possibility 301 them :)

Yes, it really affects the ranking when redesigning a website with PR 2 or 1. Splash kid is right redirect the old URL to the new pages... 'coz the PR will be the same as the old one.... Add more quality links to add more PR... related quality links I mean.....:)

Does it really affect rankings if you're just going to redesign the site but all on-page optimization that has been done before will still remain? I'm just a little bit confused.
