This is true...but that doesn't necessarily mean they are professionals selling SEO services. There are a lot of webmasters trying to do SEO themselves so really all they care about are their own sites. I know there are 'blackhat' message boards out there so it's obvious that what one person considers unethical, another could care less about.

Stereotyping the industry as a whole isn't going to change the fact that humans are humans...EVERY industry has it's share of crap.

The thing you need to realize about backlinks is that there are many ways to get them. Some people want things done fast and easy...others are willing to invest in building a powerful heavy weight website with brand. That takes a bit of ingenuity to develop unique content and an investment in long term marketing strategies (such as running a public relations campaign). So yea, some people buy links because it's easy, while others take the time to develop a true marketing plan.

The value of SEO depends on what your site is about.

If all you're offering is red eared fuzzy slippers with pretty blue bows ( ;) ), then putting a lot of money into SEO probably isn't going to provide much profit return because they market is tiny....but if your content covers popular products or topics then you stand to gain quit a bit if you're able to achieve top placement for related keywords. I have actually turned clients away because I did not feel they would see much profit from running an SEO campaign. Their target niches were simple nonexistent in search engines, or their content was too limited. They would get a much better ROI by using their marketing budgets in other areas first.

Unfortunately not all web owners are smart business people, and not all SEO companies truly understand marketing.

About the link building. The #1 for the keyword I would like to rank is owning several (~10) interlinked sites with very similar content. No added value for visitors, just to have links from relevant sites and multiple entries in directories. It's silly that this kind of behavior works...

ALL of these improve your site as a whole and the users experience. So with the greatest of respect to you, it looks like you have been reading in the wrong places, or the right places, but the wrong subject, as what you have read about is search engine positioning.

I think you are sort of correct.

Some techniques of SEO can be evil, some not.
Some helps to improve the contents, some not.
The list can go on in this pattern.

What poeple strongly disagree is it seems your post totally negate them or SEO.

SEO is similar to any other marketing in principle. The thing itself may not be necessarily bad, but it can be used in good or bad ways, and all are controlled by the hands and minds of people.

Salesperson can be an angel or devil. It helps you to understand the products and make a right decision. At the same time, it may tell lies or hard-selling which helps to deceiving people into wrong choices.

Programming knowledge can be an angel or devil. It helps you to create useful software. At the same time, destructive software (eg virus, trojans) helps to cause people troubles.

The list can go on with this pattern.

So my main point is SEO itself may not be necesarily bad, but it is sad it is used in some evil ways once in a while to boost the positions of poor websites, as in salespersons try to lure poeple into purchsing bad products.

Therefore, as a moral webmaster or SEO staff, "moral" is the key leading to healthy industry.

Don't sarcifice website quality or contents in order to boost your rank in the top of search engine.

Use clean methods, but NO dirty methods, to boost your website positions, as in we don't do immoral (or illegal) things to get cash or earn money. :p

I do the same. How about you?
