I have a deep burning question which I cannot seem to find answered anywhere.

Suppose if I have a site about Blue Widgets and Red Widgets. So I reckon the homepage should have Blue Widgets and Red Widgets in the title tags.

Question is if blue widgets is a category on its own and red widgets is a category as well, do I need to have blue widgets in the title tags of the pages in the blue widgets category? Wouldn't it be a repetition of sorts?

Here might be a clearer example:
    >Blue Widgets
    >>Where to buy Blue Widgets
    >>Blue Widgets and me
    >>Blue Widgets - Things to Look Out For

    >Red Widgets
    >>Where to buy Red Widgets
    >>Red Widgets and you
    >>Red Widgets - I need you!

Would such a series of titles be ok for the pages? Would it be considered duplicate titles or unique titles?

Nope, if the page is about blue widgets... say so.
Optimize each page for the information that is ACTUALLY on there and you can't go far wrong.

yer fine.. that would not be a problem in any way - we actually do it that way when working with SEO for Joomla.. the SEO patch sets them up as such for the SEF URLs and all the sites we've worked on with said structure work just fine (ranking wise)

I don't see any problems with your titles. If they match the content you are fine.

Oh, that's good to hear. I was afraid the multiple repeats of the Blue Widget or the Red Widget will trigger off some alarms.

Titles are good. Sometimes you can get both pages to rank for you keyword instead on one.

Yes, true. Title reflects the content on that page. Therefore, you should decide a title based on your content :)

I would use your examples for subpages, with the homepage focused on widgets in general.

    More like:

    -Widgets
    --Red Widgets
    --Blue Widgets

Then you will have specific pages to target your links to. The search engines will understand it better if you are not trying to target "red widget" and "blue widget" keywords on the same page ...plus you now have a more general page that people can link to if they are wanting to send people to a page that includes a variety of widgets.

...of course, the trick is that you want to have enough content on all three pages.
