SEO and H1, H2 TAGS

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by fergald, Oct 21, 2008.

    Hi all,

Just a quick question, from what i gather H1 and H2 tags are very important when it comes to SEO. In my site i use multiple H2 tags www.learningsteps.com - should i change this and only have one or at most two h2 tags.

I suppose my question is could i be penalized for using so many h2 tags.

    Kind Regards
    Fergal.

use h1 tag only once in your page and try to use keyword which is most important for that page. where as other tags are least important.

If you make multiple h2 tags then how will Google read your page. Think about it. Google bot will be confused which is the major h2 tag. And as the result you compete yourself inside your page for having multiple h2 tags and lastly you will not get you deserved position also.

H1 is most important and it should be only one. And Place the Good Keywords in this.
H2 is also important but lesser than H1. Use the related keywords to the H!

Don't use too many H1 and H2 tags, if you use they may come under spam. Use one H1 tag per page and some H2 tags depending on the content. Don't use too many.

Multiple H1 tags on a website can trigger a penalty if you have other spamming techniques on your page.

ok i understand one h1 tag, however what about multiple h2 tags, can you be penalized for this - should i just use bolded text with increased fonts via style sheets.

Yes, h1 tags are important, how important depends on how you use the tag and which search engine you're talking about.

Back in the days of yore... h1 tags were used as a page header designation. If your page was about "purple widgets' You would place <h1>Purple Widgets</h1> at the top of you page. When seen through a browser, the encapsulated text appeared much larger that the rest of the pages text and helped people to understand what that page of information was about.

There are differing opinions about the importance of still using the tag today, but I still use it in my sites and it does seem to help. Using them won't catapult you to the top of the search engines but if used correctly at the top of the page, it can help certain search engines to understand what your page is about. It is usually a good practice to make sure the words in your h1 tag also appear several times on the page, in your METAs, and somewhere in the Title.

In Frontpage, you may want to hand edit your code. Frontpage uses Font size formatting instead of h1 tags. Look at your page in HTML and change this:

    <font size="5">Purple Widgets</font>

    To this:

    <h1>Purple Widgets<h1>

That should do the trick for what you need. Obviously, you don't want a whole page of h1 tags on your page so use it in small doses.

    Have Fun!~

No need for it. If you don't use them right google will not like your site. They can help though.

Use what makes sense. Use CSS if you need to play with the look of the tags.

You are one site out of millions. On page ranking matters, but not enough to worry about little things like exactly how many of what to use - which no one can answer definitively and is likely to change over and over with each new crawl.

Depending on the site and how much info is on it, we use one h1, one h2, one h3, one h4, one h5...
