Anyone have a definitive answer on using tabs like sites NY Times, Yahoo, is it bad for Google spiders. content is hidden unless clicked on but it shows in the source.

if just tab, it's not hidden text, and it's ok

hidden text is for "keywords" or "large part of text"

tabs and hidden texts are 2 different things. i would not suggest you to have hidden text. SEs will not like it and will consider spamming

Text content behind tabs shouldn't cause a major issue, and is a good technique to reduce the initial clutter of a web page. As you mentioned the text will be visible within the source code along with text and background colours !! The tab method is very different to using hidden text, which is completely pointless these days.
