SEO and Advrtising advice needed

OK. I am almost finished with my freelance writing website. I just need to organize my portfolio.

I want to know what I need to do to get the site SEO'd. Directory submission? Article submission? What? I have never tried SEO before.
So, I need some newbie advice and maybe the names of some inexpensive places I can get some of this done.

Advertising...I cant figure out how to advertise off DP and freelance sites. They just do not pay good. How can I find what keywords to use in an adwords campaign? Plus, anymore advertising tips?
