Out of all the search engine optimisation advice out there the one you will come across over and over again is "you must get links". The problem comes to new site owners who are trying desperately to establish their site. How do we get them? What makes a good link? What is a reciprocal link?

These are all questions new website or blog owners face. In this article I want to explore the different types of link we can get and also the best known methods for getting them. So the first place to start is by defining the links. You are going to need oneway and reciprocal backlinks in order to rank well, however there is a significant difference in these two types of link.

A one way back link points back at your site with no link from your site mirroring it. These links hold more weight when it comes to ranking and they also take less monitoring. When it comes to oneway back links you don't even need to think of the traffic your getting from them, you simply use them to move you up the search engine indexes.

Reciprocal links are less effective at moving your ranking up however they hold a siginificant value in terms of traffic and recognition. You should aim to have between 10 - 20 quality reciprocal links from highly relevant sites.

So how do we get these links? Well lets start with one way links. The first thing you need to concentrate on is building unique, quality content that offers helpful tips and advice. You will be surprised how many webmasters will link back to quality content. Next you need to write articles and press releases, this will give you the opportunity to create highly relevant pages to link back to your site from. You should also submit your site to as many directories as possible and make them as relevant as possible.

When it comes to reciprocal links you need to concentrate on picking your link partners. Simply search under your main terms and see which sites appear. Pick a list of ten and email the relevant webmasters. It is also a good idea to have a link already on your site linking back to them, this helps sell the partnership. Also take time to read your potential partners page, and use the information to tailor your email, compliment on features and articles.

When it comes to SEO advice linking is the main subject on eveybodies lips and this is for good reason. Using the above linking techniques and working hard will help move your site to the top of Googles serps.

Where is the "how to". All I see is do this do that, no how to.
