Hello everybody. As far as I run several smaller websites at different webhosters with each domain having its own space, I'm now trying to put all small projects together at one single webhoster. What if I want to sell one of those projects, how do I handle this best? Just selling the domain name and sending all data (content/db/etc.) to the buyer (using his own space)? What about SEO issues then? Sorry for this dumb question, but for the past years I only had some bigger sites which were completely sold by simply transfering the complete webhosting contract.
You can get a resller account or one that allows multiple domains. It will be nice if all your sites can have different control panels, just like what you get in reseller accounts. WHM for managing the account and cPanel access for each domain would be great. Yes, to sell the site you can give files+mysql schema zipped along with any special instruction(chmod this dir. etc). If you have separate control panel, it would be easier to give access to the buyer.
I've sold some websites, and from my expericence I think it would be best to get the buyer to sign a contract then fax it to you. Then just send them the domain/content after the contract has been signed and payment has been made.
Purchase a reseller account whereas each site contains its own control panel and hosting. When you have sold the site provide the buyer with their unique user id and password to access the control panel for the site. Also with the sale indictate to the buyer they also receive 3 months free hosting with the purchase after which time a hosting package can be purchased or the site should be moved to another host as it will be suspended after that time. This works great for myself with all the sites I sell. And in most cases provides another source of income from the hosting fees which are very reasonable for my client base. Please let me know if you need any assistance with setting this process up as I am available for consultation at a very reasonable fee. I can also direct you to a very good reseller service and assist with the set up and training for you to continue the process going forward. Rick
My sites are not intended to be sold but who knows if I want to sell some of those sites in the future. With a reseller account, I'm still hosting the site after I sold, right? So the only possible solution to get rid (completely!) of the site, is to sell the domain and send website content to the buyer. I don't actually want to host those sites afterwards. On the other hand, a reseller account might be useful for managing different domains....hmmm.... gotta think about it. Thanks.
A reseller account typically allows you to set up a number of web sites with their own control panel without any additional cost. When you do sell a site, verify that everything is moved to the new customer and you just terminate the site which would delete everything relating to that site on your account. You don't need to host the site after it is sold, in fact you are not obligated to do so and besides when you sell the site, it is no longer yours to keep. As each site has its own control panel, you can just give the buyer access to that and have them shift within an agreed period like say 7 or 14 days.
