Selling products on my website

    Hello,

I recently have obtained a website and would like to begin selling products. I do not have a business, but would like to begin online. Is it necessary to obtain a legal business registration name in order to sell things online?

Also, does anyone know the tax regulations in texas?

    THanks,

You typically need a seller permit, but check with your state as some are different than others.

Hello fellow Texan. It kind of depends on exactly what you're doing. Here in Texas a sales tax applies on any tangible product. If you sell a tangible product you will need to get a sellers permit I believe at the county clerks office. While you're there get a DBA (doing business as) also known as an "assumed name certificate". Then go to a bank and open a business account with ur DBA, always seperate your personal/business expenditures for IRS purposes. Should you ever be audited this is very important.

you can also check out your local library for books on business startups, esp. selling online... there are a ton of resources - or head to borders/B&N/etc. and pick up a few books (you can usually sit and read through them for free). as a bonus, sometimes the library has a small business resources person whom you can ask questions to and talk with other owners to see what/how they did. good luck!

You can find official answers to your questions at the Texas Secretary of State website: www.sos.state.tx.us/corp/related.shtml

You may also be able to call the SOS office and ask questions (I know I've done this before in Oklahoma, when I needed to change the name of my LLC)

Here's the site with information about Texas sales and use taxes: www.window.state.tx.us/taxes

And this site gives more information on starting a business in Texas: www.texasonline.com/guide/index.jsp
