I have 3 different online stores: Vicious Style , Hustler Panties & my Ebay Store. So far I've been accepting Paypal exclusively & it seems to work quite well, especially since a customer can pay via credit card without signing up. I've been thinking about getting a regular merchant account because the more payment options you offer the easier it is for customers to make a purchase. But, just starting out, I would suggest Paypal since there are no startup/monthly fees.

Hope that helps and good luck! :D

I sell software online. For payments I use share-it (they specialize in working with shareware developers). I highly recommend them for software developers.

Paypal works for me. In the UK customers paying via Paypal still have to sign up to them to process a payment to me via credit card but its a lot cheaper than paying Worldpay when your not sure how much your website is going to generate by credit or debit card.

When your sites start to generate revenue you can then see if Worldpay is worth the extra money.

What software do I run what off of (and why would that be rude to ask
    :D )?

I've been monitoring "cart completion" and the people that don't complete the transaction are very few (2%?). I've actually seen a couple of people that didn't complete, come back and purchase the next day. I've also seen customers pay by credit card via Paypal without signing up for the Paypal account.

People don't have to enter their info twice. Paypal auto-enters the info for them when they get to the Paypal screen (even if they don't have a Paypal account). It's actually quite convenient. You're welcome to test-purchase through one of my sites to see exactly how easy/difficult it is. Just let me know and I'll refund your payment (if you want to go through the entire process).

    Hope that helps!

Worldpay are a good gateway to get started with as they offer a bureau service which means that they act as both payment gateway and merchant account. However, they are very expensive and like to hold onto their merchants money for as long as possible.

We used to run 5 ecommerce stores based in the UK and we started out using Worldpay. They charged us around 5% commission on each transaction with a 8 week settlement period. This hammered our margins and cashflow. A few months later we set up a separate merchant account with Lloyds cardnet who offered the best terms and opened a gateway account with Protx who charge a monthly fee for transactions. The net effect of doing this was that we reduced our creditcard/gateway costs by about 70% and our settlement period went from two months to three days.

Worldpay get a lot of business because they are the best known gateway but it is definately worth shopping around for better deals.

SecPay is a good one in the UK if you don't have your own merchant account. Barclays Merchant Services is cheaper though and has better options for future upgrades. And being linked via Barclays must give some reassurance to the customer.
