I want to put up for sale my entire web hosting company. I have approximately 128 active customers. These customers pay via paypal or moneybooker. No merchant account is required. Customers are monthly, quarterly, and annual. The business also sells domain names through a reseller, it's integrated right in.

I am selling the entire business, that means you get my hosting website as well (including graphics), not just the customers. The hosting company has an excellent brand name. Finding a hosting .com names is extremely difficult, have a look for yourself, names with the word host in them are all taken! The domain name itself has very good value.

What this business needs is someone to take it to the next level. The hosting company does well mainly through very little SEO, but truthfully I could be doing a better job. A little marketing could really take it to the next level. I want to get out and pursue other businesses. Today, my focus is on Hosted Microsoft Exchange and that is where all my time is consumed. This hosting company is about 2 years old. You will see below my income, what that is showing you is my lack of marketing. What I have is "churn" meaning I lose a few and gain a few all the time, but I am not growing in a huge way.

With the sale, I will help you out running the business for a while, it takes a little time to learn the ropes but it is pretty easy. To be successful, you will need to have a little linux knowledge and experience. Just about all functions are handled by cpanel, but sometimes it helps to be a little savvy at the command line. No big deal though as you get free support from cpanel. Also, cpanel has a really nice automated account transfer feature. That means when we move accounts to your server, it's all automated, very simple. Customers won't even know they are moving and that's the best way to keep it.

What you will need. You will need your dedicated server. I recommend 2 cpus, 4 gigs of ram, running centos. You will also need cpanel and whmcs for billing. Cpanel and Whmcs are the defacto standard in self serve hosting. Cpanel will install your cpanel for free on your server.

I will only reveal domain name in an IM as to not cause confusion or problems with my customers. Also, the website itself gets about 1000-1500 UNIQUE visitors each month. The homepage is a PageRank 3.

A few other things I know I will be asked.

No, I am not willing to just sell the customers. It's an all or nothing package.

How much time does it consume? Well it varies. Some days 0. Other days up to 1 hour max. I check in on it usually 3x per day. I get occasional helpdesk tickets (ticketing system is included, part of whmcs billing) from newbies, billing questions, new customers, customer cancels, and occasional fraud claims from paypal. The billing system also has built in fraud detection which works extremely well. I also get lots of requests for website design but I have no design or programming talent so you could possibly branch off in that area.

I want to move this site quickly, before the holidays. If you are seriously considering buying, don't wait. I want to wrap this up before the holidays start and if it drags on too long, I will wait until after new years. Customers deserve nothing less then great service.

Note, you can buy this software outright instead of paying monthly for it.

We are hosted in the US. We are not considering any partnerships other then helping you run the site for a while while you learn the ropes from us. We are selling because our focus is changing to Hosted Microsoft Exchange.

Have you got any idea what makes your customers join and quit in such a short period of time (for example you had huge jump in March followed by a huge drop in April)..

It's very simple, advertising. You advertise alot and people sign up in droves! Alot of the time people sign up and it's their first website, probably a blog. They find out that it's not what they thought and they loose interest and cancel.

Alternately, some people with lots of websites sign up and stay for a long time. They are able to control all of their sites from a single panel. These people are really good customers and are probably making money through adsense or online advertising. They sign up for the higher end packages.

I'll be the first to admit that I should have been advertising better. Even if people cancel after one month, it's not a big deal. The idea is "rinse and repeat".

 

Also, it's possible that they signed up for an annual account and their large bill is coming due.
