Selling links via text-link-ads... or any other broker? Bad or not?

    Hi,
    I'm thinking of selling text links on a website, but i'm having doubts as this is maybe considered as bad practice by the search engines.
    What are your experiences? Did your site get penalized in rankings for selling (possible non-relevant) links?
