Hi everyone, I'm new to the domain name buying and selling game and have a quick question with regards to the selling of an acquired domain name. If I have a LLLL.com which is the abbreviation of a large company can I - 1. approach them to see if they would like to buy it and 2. Can you please tell me how it helps a company or website if they already have a domain to purchase another? Thanks very much in advance and also thanks for such an informative forum and sorry if the questions above are a bit naive. John.
Hi John, to answer your questions, yes you can approach them to try to sell it to them. It can help a company who already has a domain name in different ways for different companies. One being that they can use it for a different purpose than their usual domain. Sometimes companies use a secondary for inter company emails and other purposes for them and their employees. Another is if that particular company is commonly known by a short/slang type name, kind of like Coke for Coca-Cola. Hope this help and good luck.
Be very careful how you approach them. You need to look professional. You'll find many in the business threaten to put up content defaming the company if they don't buy it - not a wise move.
You need to be trust worthy and reliable. You simply can't "threat" anyone to purchase the domain from you. Being professional is in simplest words to provide value and be qualified for making the whole process much more meaningful.
To be professional you need to do several things, here are some important one: 1. Approach the potential buyer in a nice, polite manner and be kind and thoughtful. Don't be pushy. 2. Put together a well thought out sale pitch (why they should by the name and how they will benefit from buying it) 3. Use proper spelling and grammar in your messages. 4. Reply to any replies they send you in a timely/prompt manner. 5. If they say they are not interested, or especially that they are not interested right now then thank them for their time and consideration. You never know if or when they might change their minds and if you leave a good first impression that can help later down the road.
Make very sure its not a trademark before approaching any companies or they can legally take the name from you with a UDRP Always check for "live" trademarks before you even register a domain http://tmsearch.uspto.gov/bin/gate.exe?f=searchss&state=4805:hvjpho.1.1
In addition to the above nice comments, you can also explain them the differences between the name they have now and what you have. ex: suppose you are reaching to XYZTechnologies.com to sell your domain XYZT.COM . you start telling them the good characteristics of a domain name such as short, easy to type, easy to remember. then you can tell that your domain name is very long and does not have these characteristics while the one you have has all of these. Also when it comes to pricing, be sure to show them the past sales in the after market for simillar domains. you can get past sales data from namebio.com or from dnjornal.com.
Finding LLLL.com is itself a great incident. You'll quickly find lots of people fight to get your domain on DP and NamePros and even other sites like Sedo. Let me know if you found any. Thanks
