Selling and Buying Links

We have spend a lot of money on marketing our sites. We also spend part of the budget on getting backlinks.

We also plan to sell a few links on one of our site, however, I read some where that selling link is not something "welcome" by Google and another SE, and the domains that are selling links will get penalised.

Is what I read true? Thanks!

Domains which are selling links might get penalized, but domains which buys links with less probability since you cannot control who will link to you, but you can control who do you link to.

mr dean is pretty much right.

However, If you are smart, then you shouldnt get penalized. Just dont be blatent about selling links.

If I were you just have one link on your site that says soemthing like advertising. DOnt explain that you allow purchsed links but just say that any form of advertising is welcome, and have them contact you.

Also stay away from selling your links via a Text link broker. Those can be an easy way for google to pinpoint your site as a link seller.

Basically make the user confront you for text links, keep words off your site that blatenly show that you sell links and you should be fine.

    I strongly disagree with him

My site www.indianwebdirectory has more than 70 outbound links as of now

and it has been upgraded to PR3 from PR0

So I think there might be no problem with selling links

but sell upto a minimum of 30

Outgoing links don't affect your PR.

He might be saying that he have 70 outbound paid links but still G has not problem with it as PR has increased.

I think google should not have that big problem with buy/sale links, but future it may be. Though I recommend to buy links for traffic reasons and not for seo reasons. This will not be permanent solution for your seo needs.

so you strongly disagree b/c of your one example? (perhaps experiment more before you "strongly disagree")

Im not going to say which one is correct or which one isnt (b/c honestly I dont think anyone can currently prove this theory). I do know Google has spoken as clear as night and day that they dont like people selling links.

Just dont be an idiot about selling links and you'll be fine IMO.
