Selling ads to companies. How does it exactly work?

    Hello,

I am a pretty new to the marketing business. I searched the forum for the right topic but I couldn’t find it (lack of English I guess). I have a few questions:
If I sell ads on my homepage to various companies how exactly does it work?
I want to sell CPM ads. Do companies usual send the ad ready to implement in my homepage or do I have to do anything?
If so, how can I count the page impressions (and how is the company counting the page impressions)? I have google analytics to check my Page impressions but I am not sure how to deal with companies. I don’t think it is very professional if I send them a screenshot of my google analytics and charge for the page impressions there.
    What do you recommend?

You'll have to find an ad program that allows visitors to place an ad in a position on your pages - either that, or one that lets advertisers "bid" for a position.

It's best to search for a broker that will assist in tracking and matching you with good advertisers. Yes, they get a small cut but in the end it is less of a problem implementing.

You can always try a direct message to the owner of a blog or forum for advertising, skipping the middle man. This will allow you to spend the same amount of $$ as you would with a broker but probably double the eyeballs/visitors/clicks to your website/service.

Thank you for all the answers.

Any Ideas for this part of the question:
If so, how can I count the page impressions (and how is the company counting the page impressions)? I have google analytics to check my Page impressions but I am not sure how to deal with companies. I don’t think it is very professional if I send them a screenshot of my google analytics and charge for the page impressions there.

In short, in answer to all of your questions, it's done in many forms.

I would suggest that you look into such big sites as Askmen, Yahoo, MSN...to pose as an advertiser, and see how THEY do it, and then follow suite.

If you do need a tracking program, hire a college student to save you some $. But, of course, making damn sure he has learned enough about programming to do this as it needs to be reliable. Of course.

No offense, but are you sure you have enough traffic to satisfy the big boys?

Ya know, we are talking thousands daily here.

    Hi,
I have around 1 Million page impression and around 40.000 unique users. I think that might be enough. Further I am in the finance niche and I was asked by one company (that is why I want some information first).

I advertise quite a bit, but I'm not like the big guys on the Internet block. That 1,000 or so a day isn't impressive. Sorry.

The only way I would do that if you had no more than two advertisers there, me being one of them.

And the numbers are confusing. You are, basically, saying that of the around 40,000, each of them went to around 25 pages???

    One million impressions, right?

yes. Finance updates (buying and sell Derivatives). The people are there all day...but actually that is not my question. Sorry for that
I just want to know if you could recommend a good (maybe free) tracking program for ads?

    A reliable one? ... No.

I pay by the month in most cases, and I use compete and quantcast to roughly look at their traffic.

    I keep the shit simple.

Your best bet is to either ask the big webmasters out there what they use or ask potential advertisers what they would like to see, what they are shown by other webmasters.

No, doing the latter will not matter if you think that this may make you look like an amateur to potential advertisers. If they like your site, and if they like your traffic, they could give a rat's ass.

Just know, you need a hell of a lot more than 1,000 visitors.

Impressions do not matter that much.

I guess you should start with the ad networks. They provide good campaigns with a preset CPM price. What you need to do is get their ad codes and put them on your pages.

Of course, detailed analysis will be displayed in performance report too

Ad network is a start. Later you can try to find customers yourself and quote them your CPM price based on the campaigns you are running with the ad networks. That helps.

The position and size of the ad affect the perfermance of the ad very much. Do remeber to take these feature in to account when you are setting the price.
