All you webmasters out there, did you take formal training to learn the things you know about the interenet or are you self taught? It just amazes me when I read some of these posts how knowledgable everyone is and I'm not.
I am self taught SEO, I have only been doing the job a few months. This forum and SEO book taught me most of the stuff I know. Still learning though!
I think you'll find most SEO's are self taught, even now there aren't a lot of courses or classes around. Programming and web design are a little different though.
I wasted my time doing an online SEO class, but for the most part self taught. Universities don't offer degrees in online marketing, at least not when I was looking. I remember being at one job and asking this dude who was doing a marketing degree at the time, how much focus was on online marketing. It was negligible. You'll learn more here on DP then any degree will teach you.
It's difficult to teach SEO/SEM in a class as it's so fast paced. The course would change during the time it was being run if it took new developments into account as it should. Look at things like social networking and myspace marketing which have exploded over the last few months.
My college degrees were a great start, but learning niche functional areas within business has come with many years of industry work and learning. The thought that you can learn more on a forum than any degree isn't a very straight forward comment. Online marketing is a very small portion of marketing. Learn marketing as a whole and by default you will be a better marketer on the web. I think many get marketing and SEO (search engine optimzation) confused. Not one in the same.
Not to sound like another cheerleader, but I honestly learned most of what I know now from the DP members.
Everything I know about Web is self taught. Education wise I am an engineer but that had nothing to do with Web.. My best method is Hit and Try
Well, i started myself and had a few decent sites when i was first starting high school. Then my sophomore year in high school i decided id take a web design class because it would be an easy grade. The class was supposed to be for seniors only, and here i was a sophomore because i tested into the class and scored well enough. Now i have been out of high school for over 4 years and seem to be doing alright. So i guess you could say i was self taught but i did take a class or two along the way for some easy grades
Completely self-taught; web design and SEO, all by trial and error. SEO is everchanging, but if you get the basic elements in place, you can learn to grow along with the advancements of SEO.
I am also completely self tought. Before i went to college to do landscape gardening i had never even been on the internet. As soon as i went on it i could see the pottential for money to be made so i took the bull by the horns and went for it
i have a programming background so it was a little easier for me to pick things up... but everything i know about internet technologies and seo is through forums like dp... thanks a million...
I am 100% self taught. It began in grade 10 when I picked up an HTML book for dummies. I had taken some programming class, but as you know HTML is so much easier. I then basically built sample sites to increase my skills. Then I taught myself photoshop. From there I wasn't sure what type of site to build. I tried to build an HTML tutorial site, but felt the competition was too steep so I dumped that. I then found Blogger and began blogging about techology. From there Blogmaster helped me to set Gazotto.com and use WP. I also have self-taught SEO, but it's probably not one of my strengths. Coding, Design, SEO is totally self taught. If you are motiviated enough you can learn anything. Just keep at it. Skinny
self taught but with a lot of help from forums & newsgroups. Could not have done it all myself. BTW 1Eight, School is for winners. By calling all schoolgoers losers, you have just named yourself publicly. The way society is today, how else can you get an education?
