Selecting Layers in Photoshop CS4

When I have layers within a group, it seems to be impossible to select them without having to navigate through the group. For example, if I have a text layer in my image which I want to edit the layer of, if I CTRL-Click on the text it will select the group that the text layer is within instead of the actual layer.

Is it possible to allow Photoshop to select the actual layer and not the inhabiting group?

If you have the group expanded, then it should select the layer, not the group.

NOTE: The group may be highlighted, but the layer should be highlighted too. The group is highlighted to let you know what group the layer you're working on is in.
