When selecting keywords to target your site from, from a HUGE list (most popular searched one at the top)
I heard you shouldnt go for the most popular keyword, to point to your site (as an anchor text)
because this one wil have LOADS of competition.

So from a list of 100 keywords, i wont go for the top/most valuable one.

I wil go for a lower one, type it in google and see what quantity of Search it comes up with.

What quantity of search volume of google should i be looking for, for a reasonable keyword
    for my site?

    For example
    Google results for 'affiliates'

    = 1 - 10 of about 198,000,000 for affiliates

198,000,000 is TOO large... so what google figure should i be aiming at, while in selection of
5-10 keywords for my fairly new site? (keywords which aint in as much competition as the TOP/popular HIGH ones)

well my advice to you is target the not so popular keywords that is related to what your aspiring to rank on. Like if you wanted to target fashion, well its a one tail keyword so expect that its hard to rank well and your site is still new, so target other related keywords on fashion like clothes or add some words on fashion to make it more attractive..

Target the lesser competitive ones, and indirectly you would still be very slowly, but sure, improving your chances of competing for the more competitive keyword or phrases further down the line.

So for example going for "affiliate keyword" or "keyword affilate keyword keyword"

Obviouisly in the examples above, keyword being your other chosen keyword to make a phrase.

Regarding the search volume im unsure.
