selecting keywords against authority domains

If my keyword I am trying to target has a lot of authority seller sites on page 1 such as amazon, ebay, sears but are not really on page optimized for that key word. Is it still a good idea to try to rank for that keyword on a content based website?

 

Great question, I believe it is worth it but would like to hear what others have to say about it.
