Like afoley77 said use google adwords keyword tool to find keywords for you to write about on your website that is about your niche. To find if the key word has high or low competition is a little tougher though.

I use Traffic Travis to see if the keyword is easy to rank for. They have a free version you can download and install. Once you have Traffic Travis click on seo and then competition. Insert your keyword and the program will analyze your keyword and tell you if it will be easy to rank for or not.

Or you could look at what your website does and what it sells RE products and services and you could go and look at the top SERPS on Google & study the pages results including ads and then check out the competition and their websites...

The best and also free to use is Google's Keyword Tool. It is very simple to use and here are the steps:
    1. Identify the category of the contents of your website. Let's say it is on Online Businesses. Then to make it more specific, find it's subcategory for example: Email Marketing, Traffic Generating, List Building etc.
    2. Use the subcategory as the word to type in Google's Keyword Tool. You can also use your main category to make the results more general. Or simply just type in the words that you wanted to find it's most used keywords.
    3. Before clicking search, go to advanced options and filters.
    4. Under Locations, select All Countries.
    5. On the left hand side of the screen, under Match Types, check the boxes for broad and also [Exact].
    6. Lastly, click search.
Choosing only keywords with high count of searches is not highly recommended because of it's high competition. The chances that people will land on your website through search engines are quite small especially if you just started your website. I recommend you choose a lot from the highest searched, followed by medium and lastly with a small number of low ones. This way whatever people typed on the search engines, your website will surely to appear and eventually traffic started to come in. Good luck!

You can put your main keyword in Google Adwords Keyword Tool and you would get several related keywords about your website, you can choose some keywords from them according to which keywords are too beneficial and too relevant to your website, they should also be less competitive.

Use keyword analysis tool (Google Adword). Analyse competition level, global search, local search. Analyse the keyword competitors position and then finally select the keyword.
