You're going to be in for quite a rude awakening from me, so sit down and take a breath before reading further.

Ok, now that we have that out of the way, don't. Don't what? Don't compete on price, of course! You don't want to deal with people who are shopping on price alone (they're the worst clients you can possibly have). Afterall, if they're looking for the lowest price, chances are they don't have the money anyway, or they're extremely unwilling to give it away.

Next, always - and I do mean ALWAYS - get a signed contract. Even better, get the new client to sign yours instead of making you sign theirs.

SitePoint has some wonderful articles on freelancing (I've also included an article from Digital Web Magazine). I've included them below for you. :)

There are plenty of people looking for low budget freelance workers on sites like guru.com or rent-a-coder etc. Personally wouldnt touch this kind of work with a barge pole as they typically want high quality, fast turn around and low budget and dont get the concept that if you priorities price you have to compromise on the other two. That said, what is low budget in one country may well be a nice sum of money in another.
